I'm a big fan of the new line of Netbooks. I carry one around as a backup to my MacBook Pro and find that in some cases it meets my needs when I'm on the go just fine, filling the gap between mobile smartphone and full size computer.
James Kendrick has posted his tips to help people make the proper choices over on GigaOm.
The biggest tip I can make is buy a 9 or 10 inch size netbook, and make sure it has the Intel Atom 1.6 processor. Everything else is just too underpowered to do things grown ups like to do with PCs.
My second tip is think about buying a 3G data card. Until the Qualcomm powered mids come out with the SnapDragon platform and on-board 3G, having an external USB data card is a very useful option.
Last but not least, take the pre-load with Windows XP, and if you can XP Pro. Avoid Vista for now and only go with a Linux version if you're comfortable with the various flavors.
