The trip to Martinborough exposed me a whole slew of new producers who are making extremely well-made and hand crafted wines in New Zealand. By tasting these I discovered much of what we see in the USA is from the larger Mondavi, Gallo or Kendall-Jackson size producers, and sadly, the really good stuff hardly leaves the island as quantity, demand and price dictates that. So, enjoy the tease while I figure out how to solve the problem of getting the great wines to the USA.
First is the Kasuda 2012 Riesling. Friends in the UK can likely find this at Berry Bros. and Rudd. This is my kind of Riesling. Think Austrian with even more mineralality and tongue tickling bright fruit.
The Escarpment 2011 Pinot Noir was full of bright fruit. Think about youthful Au Bon Climat or the style of Pinot Noir Doug Margerum used to have made for the Wine Cask. Perfect balance and berry in style. Yummy.
At Gladstone Vineyards the choices were many. Alexis Moore, their young Canadian winemaker has the knack for balance and style as their Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc from the 2012 harvest demonstrated. The Sauv Blanc is the Kiwi style I fancy while the Viognier is in line with what one finds in the mold of Cold Heaven's from Santa Barbara.
Muirlea Rise's Justa Red is a wine that esoteric fans would love. It is an eclectic blend of red grapes and perfect with lamb grilled on the BBQ.
Up next the wines of Schubert Vineyards as the deserve a post of their own!
