The SF Chronicle covered the launch day of XOHM, but overlooked the fact that the Bay Area already has wireless broadband from client Covad Wireless and Towerstream, albeit at business, not consumer pricing.
The difference? The services from TowerStream and Covad vs. what XOHM is offering is akin to private line vs. a party line. In the XOHM concept of WiMax in order to keep the costs at a competitive level, the user share the spectrum. With TowerStream and Covad, the only difference between a wired T1 or higher and an unwired circuit is the lack of the wire.
Both offer proven connectivity, and recently Covad Wireless supported the Office 2.0 conference for the second year in a row. Not a peep of complaints were heard from the attendees about the WiFi in the hotel, because Covad's Wireless Braodband Internet and Swisscom's in building deployment was done right.
