No one should be surprised by the comments from Qualcomm's Len Lauer about WiMax. This is a repeat of the company's perspective on WiFi back in the late 90's and early 2000s'.

New Intel Chipsets To Make WiMax More Accessible

Intel has announced a new series of chip sets that will make the world of WiMax more accessible.

Basically they draw less power which means greater battery life. Dubbed Santa Clara, this series is a forerunner to Montevina, the line of chips destined for the mini and sub-notebook market.

The Public Wants WiMax

It seems the public wants WiMax.

In what can be only perceived as good news to the folks at Sprint/Nextel, Covad, Nokia and Clearwire, as well as a few others, and in my opinion this is likely bad news to those at Qualcomm who would rather see EvDO as the platform of choice. At least those details are being reported by according to a recent survey just released by In-Stat according to WiFi Planet.

Nokia Looking At WiMax Mobile

Jonathan Greene points out that Nokia plans on being a serious player in the Mobile WiMax game and speculates what they may be up to.

WiMaxWatch Relaunced

I've decided the time is right to relaunch WiMaxWatch. The market is starting to grow it it overlaps with my interest in MuniWireles and Wireless Broadband.

During CTIA I got a nice overview from Sprint on what they are up to. I'm also catching up on what Covad and Nokia's plans are in the sector and making an effort to stay as informed as possible on the subject.

Getting WiMax Indoors

Unstrung's Dan Jones has a well encapsulated overview of the possibly options for getting WiMax indoors once it gets rolled out by Sprint.

With the soon to be released Intel chips that offer WiMax on them so the receptivity is resident within laptops, getting the signal indoors is going to be the operators biggest challenge, just like WiFi operators are seeing in the MuniWireless space.

A hybrid WiFi/WiMax solution likely is initially appealing as the installed user base of 802.11b/g/n means the end users are ready. How the broadband gets to them is usually their least concern.

The operators who take the market readiness of the user base into consideration first will be the ones who get users online the quickest, while those who wait for the better technology to come along will likely be left waiting for the users to jump on board.

Sprint Going Places With WiMax

Sprint was featured in a story about their WiMax efforts in the Chicago Tribune last week.

What was left out was that Covad already has a beachhead in the market with their recent acquisition. The fact that Covad, via their NextWeb subsidiary that is now called Covad Wireless is there and that Sprint has also targeted Chicago is no surprise.

With one of the most ancient telephone cable infrastructures in the nation, and with an enormous amount of urban renewal going on, WiMax provides a wireless way for broadband advancement.
