The Comunicano Communique
Today is Martin Luther King Day in the USA, so it's a Federal Holiday. Banks, schools and government workers all get a three day weekend so that makes it a bit of a slower than normal Monday news day. Still, I've found a few items of interest and some breezy reading for you....so have at it...and enjoy your semi-day off if you are "working."

Airbus CEO Tom Enders confirmed that the aircraft manufacturer will provide helicopters to Uber, which will become available to hire on demand, reports The Wall Street Journal. "Its a pilot project, we'll see where it goes-but it's pretty exciting," said Enders at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich, Germany.
At this point, self-driving cars are futuristic in the way next Thursday is futuristic: not here yet, but definitely coming. The government's pumping billions into the idea, and Tesla Motors, Google, Uber, General Motors, Faraday Future, Baidu, and a long list of companies you would and wouldn't think of are reserving their slice of the now-inevitable world where cars don't need humans and can come to us with the press of a button.
Verizon-owned AOL has an image problem. The issue, according to chief marketing officer Allie Kline, is that there's a disconnect between the parent company and all the brands that are part of it. For example, when she talks to people about AOL, they often mention how they use it as their mail service, while having absolutely no idea that it also owns The Huffington Post.
Today at the DLD conference in Germany, the CEO of Facebook-owned WhatsApp made a couple of big announcements about how the messaging app plans to evolve to its next phase as it approaches 1 billion users: the company plans to drop its $0.99 annual subscription fee, and it will start to test out more commercial services - specifically it's looking at ways of launching business accounts for companies to communicate with their customers.
The rental car companies pissed off the wrong guy. Luke Schneider and his friends had a bad experience renting a car for a golf weekend. So Schneider started Silvercar, a next-generation car rental company that takes the hassle out of renting a car.

The change in IT hiring was illustrated this week by General Electric Co., which announced it is moving its headquarters from Fairfield County, Conn., to Boston. In doing so, Jeff Immelt, GE's CEO, said Greater Boston is home to 55 colleges and universities, and "attracts a diverse, technologically fluent workforce."
SAN FRANCISCO - Is tech in for a rude awakening this year after a magic carpet ride the past few years? The numbers, and recent actions by once high-flying start-ups, would seem to suggest so. Consider: Mega-rounds, defined as funding of more than $100 million for venture capitalist-backed companies, are in free fall.
You read all the literature on micromanagement. You avoid forcing your ideas on your colleagues and friends whenever possible. But you still worry about whether or not you are coming across in a helpful, positive light. ...Or maybe this quiz suddenly appeared in your inbox from an anonymous sender?
