Let's face it. Ever since the smartphone has come along, other than a very few frequently called numbers, we all tend to use the contact directory more than dialing. In our cars we often use speech activated calling, basically making the phone number less relevant. If I know your name, I can call you. It's that simple.
But with the rise of Skype, FaceBook, WhatsApp and Viber as the calling mode, who even needs to know the number let alone have one.
Today i had a call with a close colleague who happens to be attending meetings in Shenzhen, China. I'm in Lisbon, Portugal. He was on hotel Wi-Fi and I was on Vodafone's 4G/LTE network at my gym. the call was crisp, clear and in HD quality audio. The call was over Facebook's calling feature inside Facebook Messenger. There wasn't the usual latency associated with a mobile call we have over the circuit switched network. The call was awesome and other than the data I consumed against my plan, totally free.
