You have to hand it to T-Mobile and Apple. The Apple iOS 8 update includes updates that enable both VoLTE and HD Voice for users of the iPhone 5C, 5S and starting tomorrow, the 6 and 6 Plus smartphones.
And, as a result I had my first HD Voice call that was over Mobile, and in my case it was over WiFi with T-Mobile's new WiFi calling for iPhone that iOS 8 enables. The sound quality was AMAZING. Clear, crisp and like I was in the same room with the other party who was on a Windows Phone.
What's equally impressive is the SIP/IMS implementation of WiFi/VoLTE Handover. While prior release used the Kineto platform, I'm hearing that the new implementation isn't Kineto, and what's more, the VoLTE/WiFi calling handover works in both directions.
Together this means HD and IP based calling. This makes me think WebRTC will be next...but I'm guessing....
