For years roaming on WiFi was Boingo and everybody else. And with everybody else the back office issues were immense. And for mobile operators who have a back office solution for mobile voice and data roaming there already were solutions that made things like authentication and settlement easy. Well not so for WiFi.
That's why yesterday's news from iPass and DT (parent of T-Mobile) makes so much sense. It fills a niche that needed to be filled the way an itch needs to be scratched. It was a hole that needed filling and brilliant move at a time when WiFi is becoming the data users best friend.
In Europe, where I frequently travel, WiFi is plentiful and while here in the USA we consume so much data over 3 and 4G, over there WiFi is the route to staying connected. With WiFi Mobilize WiFi roaming just became far more carrier friendly and has to beg the question if people need a third party to use for WiFi access if it all ends up via your mobile bill?
