Why does my iPhone run through battery power on AT&T like a hot knife through butter but in Spain on Orange the battery life is far better. Well at least with 3G data off.
My guess is that the 3G radio in the iPhone and the sparse number of AT&T towers, or under capacity, leads to an ever seeking access situation.
Next test, turning on 3G data.
I've experienced the same behavior in Spain. All my friends and family who live there and have iPhones mostly leave their 3G turned off and use a jailbroken-type app to temporarily turn it on when they need it.
You will find that if you turn 3G on in Spain, the battery will die even faster than in the US, because there's a lot more 3G coverage.
What I wish Apple did was a sort of "adaptive" 2.5/3G roaming where the device would pick its network based on the throttling of data required.

Andy the iPhone is not exactly renowned for its battery life anyway but it maybe that the push mail is reduced on lower speeds (EDGE) for example. By altering the settings on push mail you will find a significant improvement in your battery life.
