This passed by a lot of people as I haven't seen much on it. It seems a few days ago legislation is making its way through Congress that makes VoIP calls the same as those from the PSTN when it comes to E911.
That's great news in my book.
At this point telephone service, VoIP, PSTN, Digital Voice via a cable operator or even cell phone service has become in many people's minds the same. Heck, the devices look the same. Some are interchangeable between PSTN and VOIP with an ATA, some are dual mode Mobile VoIP and in some cases people just need help.
Now that this is happening, the USA needs a total overhaul of how 911 works. And the law enforcement agencies need to overhaul there systems as well. 911 is the number engrained in our brains. If a problem occurs hearing a message saying things like "for non-emergency matters call xxx-xxxx between 9-5" or long waits on hold for mobile users doesn't cut it any more. The mobile phone only using "cord cutter" needs to have the ability to reach their local PSAP as fast as a land line user.
Hopefully this legislation will help lead to that.
