It was nice to see Singapore based blogger James Seng write a post about VoIP even if he basically says nothing is new.
Om Malik riffs on the theme presenting both sides of the coin. He's right in my opinion about the price game. I've said for many years now that its about the apps and features, not the price, since the price is effectively at zero or so close it doesn't matter any more.

I hope Mr. Seng is kidding. The i-pod is not new, but anybody who gets their "first i-pod" immediately becomes an evangelist for Apple. The whole VOIP category is NEW. Ask anybody outside your work scope (that you haven't influenced) what VOIP is, they do not know. They may have heard of Vonage because of their recent advertising, but they don't know "what" it is or the benefits it has to offer. Introduce somebody to SKYPE and its benefits with FREE SKYPE to SKYPE communication and they are blown away...that's NEW. Now throw in the neat little SKYPE phones and gadgets that make it so easy to talk to loved ones without spending a fortune on long distance and that's NEW. I've recently turned my mom, "Grandma", into a huge SKYPE fan. She can now see the Grand kids, yes SEE them using the SKYPE video option. She is completely amazed each time we talk. And yes...all her friends are calling me to see if I can get them set up with SKYPE so they can have the same experience. In my opinion, sometimes the closer we get to what we do the more "matter of fact" we may become about it. This technology rocks, get excited! John @ Philips
