Back in December I was introduced to a company with an idea that lets small business have a VoIP phone system that in principal reminded me of the 1980's era AT&T Merlin. That company was Telephony2. The product is called CallButler and recently was reviewed by Small Business Technology .
For those who don't remember the Merlin, it was designed as an on premise based Centrex like system, that had very low cost, and lots of features. For businesses with less than 10 people, or for large homes with lots of phone extensions the Merlin was ideal. We had one in my office and later installed one in the owner of the Flyers home to connect to the Spectrum's PBX. That was 1894/85 and since then while a lot has changed. Up until Telephony2's arrival, I never quite saw the replication of what was an extremely successful platform in the Merlin on the market the right way that didn't involve the need for the resident geek. What has been missing, despite the claims of many who build Asterisk based platforms was in essence the PBX in a box.
Telephony2 changed all that, and quickly became an agency client because, because like many of our clients, they have something unique and different. First is low cost. Second is ease of use. Third is being feature rich. Lastly, they have something that works today. Not in ten months or ten years.
