Client BridgePortNetworks is in the news all of Chicago today all around MobileStick as both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times provided high profile coverage on the USB memory stick that is more than just talk.
MobileStick is the antidote for mobile operators who have been suffering lost utilization of their services inside buildings. For customers who can connect to the Internet BridgePortNetworks' technology turns the Net into one giant roaming cloud. It is also a wonderful way for carriers to offset the loss of revenue from calls to Skype and other online VOIP services by bridging VoIP with the cellular world.
With MobileStick as a carrier option it actually turns the mobile operator into a VoIP provider, something I have felt for a very long time is a logical move for them. Now with a MobileStick the laptop or home/office desktop becomes a customers own on premise gateway. With USB and Bluetooth ports connected to wireless phones as extensions, the PC becomes the ATA (analog telephone adapter) and voila, instant VoIP using your mobile phone number and carrier.
BridgePort Networks has had this idea in the hopper for over a year, introducing the concept first in 2006 at 3GSM. They spent the past year focusing on it and have just begun showing it off. Based on the local press reaction around Chicago, and the industry thought leaders to the reporters, I'd say it's an idea whose time has come.
