Polycom is a company that pretty much owns the desktop conference room speakerphone market. While many competitors exist, if you walk into boardrooms of companies you find Polycom's distinctive starfish speakerphone, but with yesterday's purchase of Spectralink Polycom is going portable.
This is a very good sign for the WiFi handset market as well as for the in-building WiFi access point market.
Given Polycom's reach, sales force and channel strategies the business world will begin to migrate more of their on-campus and in office phone traffic to devices that work inside the LAN vs. the mobile phones that work on the WAN called the carrier network. But this does not mean the IP world and the mobile operators should not co-exist. They should.
The need to move calls between WAN, LAN, Mobile, PSTN is key to all this. The guys in the middle who can make this work are going to be the winners in my book.
