Glenn Fleishman knows his WiFi so it's worth checking out his story at MacWorld on the iPhone for his perspective on convergence.
Reports I'm hearing about the iPhone is that Apple has been bitten hard by Cingular/AT&T the same way the Nokia E62 was. In the words of one friend, castrated is a better term.
Basically from the early rumors out about the iPhone users will be able to browse the web and get email. Other Internet apps over WiFi won't be there at release, or maybe never.
This may change, just like the leadership at the now AT&T run Cingular starts to change. It seems many of the netcentric AT&Ters are just chomping at the bit to make the wireless network really an Internet on ramp. One only has to remember AT&T's vision for Internet in the 90s that got seriously derailed and then mutated over time. Some of those same people are still around, many in the AT&T labs and it's only a matter of time when the world wakes up over there.
