Carl Weinschenk has a great post on IT Business Edge about the coming day of Interoperability with VoIP. I for one could not agree more. But to have true interoperability, we need to have SIP talk to SKYPE and Skype talk to SIP, not just have gateways, addresses, nodes and such that is beyond the average consumer.
Client and friend David Beckemeyer has simplified a lot of this with his PhoneGnome, and for the consumer market there is nothing easier. Yahoo and MSN are taking steps, but Earthlink and AOL are left out on the sidelines. Gizmo and Google are SIP so all things can connect there, but until the different flavors of voice and video all speak the same tongue, the idea of interoperability is only a myth.
