Last weekend I purchased two new Sony VGN-UX180Ps, one for me, and one for Helene as an early birthday present for her. Why? I knew after she saw mine she would want one of her very own and likely so will you.
Forget how it's so tiny, under two pounds. What it does so well is SightSpeed's awesome video communications (SightSpeed is a client). It also has downright impressive phone quality with Gizmo Project, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and AOL's AIM PhoneLine that is part of the Triton project at AOL.
The form factor is also phone like, with built in mic and speaker, but with a headset it really rocks. I've used the DSP 100 from Plantronics and still find that it's the best headset I've used that's non-Bluetooth. It also has Cingular's EDGE service, but I've found it buggy for making SIP calls.
Nonetheless, the size, weight and absolutely stunning audio and video makes this a real gadget guy's gotta have, especially if you want to use SightSpeed for video or voice calling, or any of the VoIP services out there. It blows away just about everything else, but would you expect any less from the company that knows how to consumerize sound and video best?
As far as a voice and video portable device goes, this PC’s size and weight, plus power and ease of use is the new Newton (only if Apple made one this size could it be better)
