Meg Whitman has shaken up the troops at eBay, and it appears Skype will be the better for it.
While the changes at the top will get the press coverage, the real keys to this are the promotion of six year eBay exeutive Henry Gomez to CMO and the lateral move of former Skype CMO Saul Klein to run the eCommerce initiative.
Klein joined Skype just before merger and Gomez came on board just after. Gomez is a seasoned veteran and an eBay insider who will have Meg's ear. What's more is he will be in an ideal position to help Skype navigate some very difficult regulatory issues that are rising around the globe.
Klein, was very much a part of the rapid growth phase with third parties, along with the departed Pooj Preena, so his participation in new ecommerce efforts like pay-per-call and other ways to make the Skype service more used will be key.
But the winner here is Gomez and Skype. He'll also reign in all the communications on a global basis and make things more consistent and more planned.
I see this as a good step for Skype and as a result eBay.
