While no one's saying, it seems that the natives are getting restless at Vodafone and the rumors of their blocking VoIP on their mobile networks data side are swirling. And that means Skype is their first target, at least in Ben Charney's view.
This is a continuation of the mobile operators walled garden approach to content and content offerings but most of all they don't want voice minutes moving over to the data network without a way to make money on it or as I've learned at CTIA, without a way to bundle the voice over IP traffic.
I envision the mobile operators offering VoIP that seamlessly hands over the call to IP either by WiFi mode via dual mode phone or to the PC or other SIP soft-client end point. Since IP minutes are less costly, the mobile operators will bundle in buckets of minutes, establish on net to on net calling plans just like they have night time packages that enable the wireless company to have more of the customers talk time run over their platform. This means mobile operators will become the leading outlet for next generation technology, not the incumbent land line companies who keep losing market share to the wireless and cable world.
