So I'm sitting here thinking about the latest Yahoo deal and what's coming down the pike with Call In and Call Out and I realized that Yahoo, and maybe Gizmo Project are in an idea position to be in the call me anytime, anywhere business. But they're missing one little piece. Wireless
To do that they need to be in on the deal for the next generation of WiFi phones. I'm not talking the stuff we've seen this week from Vonage or what's been out before. I'm talking about the new stuff from Kyocera and Nokia that offers a SIP based WiFi and either CDMA or GSM cell phone.
To make this work they need a carrier deal. Enter Boingo Wireless. Boingo, which likely will work with Helio and Sprint due to deep relationships is an ideal partner for Yahoo or Gizmo especially if they realize that the opportunity is ripe to make a deal with Boingo, especially in light of their Skype deal, which I hear is non-exclusive.
Verizon's pretty much wedded to an EvDO strategy, and actually looking into a WiMax hybrid with one of the major WiMax players at the exploratory level. T-Mobile is another candidate, but they move so, slow. AT&T/SBC have to sort things out so Cingular, with added ownership by Bell South is not a factor yet, as their WiFi is even more diluted.
Boingo is the ideal play for Yahoo and Gizmo, especially if they move soon.
From my view it's a race that both Gizmo and Yahoo can play in. The only question I have, is will the Postman deliver the contracts for a deal this year or next.
