The Atlanta Journal Constitution ran a story over the weekend, first reported here on VoIPWatch on Friday about the new BellSouth VoIP service being offered that is powered by 8x8's Packet 8 platform.
It seems that BellSouth does not appear to be fully wedded to Packet 8 yet, judging by the comment made in the story attributed to Bell South's spokesperson. A comment like that doesn't usually get into a newspaper article unless the spokesperson usually emphasizes the point and says something to the effect of "this is something we'd like to make sure is known." In PR parlance, it's called "asking for the mention."
There are also two caveats. DSL subscribers only, and E911 capable areas.
Those who want BellSouth VoIP will have to use the company's digital subscriber line service for broadband Internet. And the service is only for areas with enhanced 911, or E911, systems
Still this is a win for 8x8. Hopefully for their sake BellSouth promotes this VoIP play better than Verizon did with VoiceWing.
