Business Week has a story about some of the pitfalls facing VoIP users when it comes to 911 Emergency services.
While the issue today is a big deal, I don't see that it will remain over time as much of a problem. First, if the FCC wants to get into the regulation of VoIP it will be too easy to require certain essential identification details to be required. Second, by adding a GPS type of chip to the handset or ATA, it will be able to be solved, even more accurately than just providing an address. The technology to put GPS location into a VoIP device has existed for years. Thus the problem will go away and stop being an issue that the telcos will keep pushing to the media.
I thought the problem with GPS is based solution is in-building coverage is not dependable.
