Did 8x8 Put Vonage, Skype and Others Behind the 8 Ball?

The patent announcement today by Packet8's parent 8x8 regarding distributed gateways and VoIP on the surface reads to me like companies dumping calls into the PSTN from the IP world may be in for some negotiations.
