Battelle on Vin Cerf and Net Neutrality

Ted Shelton at IP Inferno is developing a very cool blog aggregation tool called the Personal Bee. He also found a kick ass posting from John Battelle and an interview done with Vin Cerf on the subject of Net Neutrality. It's marked a must read and it is.

The key point is Cerf's clear eyed view how the telcos (and even the MSOs) are focused on an old, an in reality, out of date business model which was based on one time, real time, type of uses of the network, that were billed for each time there was a "call." Think I'm kidding. Just ask yourself why you pay for each 411 call versus have a year's subscription to Directory Services. Even more, call 411 and when they can't find a number you can find via Google or Yahoo's search tools the operator tells you that they can't use the Internet to look things up.

Voice in the current DSL and even Cable models of triple play can be very big cash cows, but they can be prize winning heffers if the management would stop shoveling what comes out of the back end, and think about espousing something better out of their own mouths.
