More IP Phones Coming

IP telephones are being announced more requently and released in quantity as companies like D-Link ramp up.

This is why companies like Qualcomm and Siemens are moving quickly to have a significant space in VoIP convergence with CDMA and GSM. This all points nicely to Bridgeport Networks and Popular Telphony, two firms working in different directions to make IP telephony work better.

Uncle Charlie Wants To Hear You

Sam's younger brother, Charlie, he's the FCC half of the family, has asked for comment about VoIP wiretaps.

At issue is the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), a federal law that mandates surveillance backdoors in US telephone networks, allowing the FBI to start listening in on a target's phone line within minutes of receiving court approval. Last month the commission tentatively approved a proposal by the Department of Justice, the FBI and the US Drug Enforcement Administration that interprets CALEA as applying to Internet traffic, ruling that cable modem, broadband over power line, satellite, wireless and other high-speed Internet providers are covered by the law. At the same time the FCC ruled that "managed" Internet telephony providers like Vonage must also become wiretap friendly.

The Triple Play

A day or so ago I blogged that the day of the Triple Play is looming, with likely Verizon being the first to really make a stab in that direction from the world of the Telcos and RBOC's here in the USA.

This morning I noted that Yankee ex-pat blogger in London, James Enck commented on a story about a recent SwissCom acquisition.

There is no question in my mind that the telcos want to deliver Video on Demand and in Real Time, especially with FTTH (fiber to the home) being rolled out, and with advanced wireless technologies like Flarion, are clearly heading in that direction along with their VoIP and Broadband data efforts.

The reason is simple. Survival. Not as a business, but in order to keep the investors happy. The RBOCs are in a battle with the cable companies, which is what makes the AT&T strategy for VoIP so shrewd. They can afford to be like Switzerland, and work with RBOC's (now that AT&T is getting out of local service) and with the cable operators.

Either way they win.

BridgePort Raises Money

BridgePort Networks is expected to announce the closing of Series B financing on Monday of next week if all rings true as they have raised $25 million in new capital. New investors include TD Capital Ventures, which led the round, and BCE Capital (an affiliate of Bell Canada Enterprises), joined existing investors Polaris Venture Partners and General Catalyst Partners, who also participated in
this round.

Bridgeport which bridges wireless and VoIP networks so they can work together in landing Bell Canada shows they are making major inroads by getting carriers interested in their product offerings, which are software based.

Is VoIP + ADSL Zooming Along?

When I read this announcement I looked at it as another product coming out. When I add in the recent double play from Verizon I see the merits of this in another light.

What I really want to see is VoIP wireless unit, that is both base station and cordless phone in the house. 802.11g, 54 megs of throughput 5.8 mhz handsets that talk to the wireless access point or router, and the option of giving each handset it's own SIP address and phone number that can be configured easily.

What I've seen so far in the first generation WiFi VoIP handsets have been less than blowing my socks off.

Mercator Capital On Vonage and VoIP

Merctor Capital's most recent newsletter has inght about Vonage and their current and future offerings.

It's a good read and worth looking through. While not "news" per se, the author presents a good summary of Vonages plans. The reference to UK and Switzerland is interesting because Vonage has not said much on the subject of International, other than they plan to be International. Perhaps something was revealed to the author in a briefing.

That point deserves more understanding, but Vonage PR has been mum on the subject when I've posed the question before. Hopefully, this report opens up the log jam.
