Wireless + VoIP on A PDA

I'm in Chicago on business the next few days and having a blast at my Wayport wireless powered hotel.

Why? First the wireless is totally free and 802.11g to boot in all parts of my two room oversized suite at the Wyndham, a chain which has approached things right. Seems they ripped out the STSN wired service and made the whole building wireless. Smart.

So yesterday I fired up both my laptop and PDA, tapped the Pocket Skype icon and ended up chatting with
Stuart Henshall of Unbound Spiral a blog worth checking out.

The call quality was amazing over the PDA, which does suffer from one problem related to the mic. It's not high grade enough. That said, the voice quality and bandwidth was solid enough to have a very good conversation for free.

Earlier I chatted with Dave @ FastMobile using their FastChat application also on the PDA, an iPaq 4355. Once again, quality was sensational.

In my view, all that's needed is a beefed up processor in the PDA, a better mic and possibly a Bluetooth headset, something I'll check out when I return to Del Mar next week.
